w 20151216 barge pond MONTELSA true haven of peace, the small village of Montels is located on the outskirts of the pond of Capestang and offers magnificent views of the site.

A long time ago, the sea came to the foot of the village of Capestang, whose name means "Cape of the pond". Thanks to its salt works, the pond of Capestang was, from the early Middle Ages, an important source of income for the region that the archbishops of Narbonne were sure to exploit. Today largely drained and located on private land (hunting area), the pond of Capestang is of real ecological interest. Classified as a Natura 2000 zone, this pond is rich in ample vegetation and many species of birds come to nest there (egrets, harriers, teals, spoonbills, herons, flamingos, etc.).

Once or twice a year, a visit to the pond is organized. Check with the tourist office.
