Assignan
A few kilometers from Saint-chinian, the village of Assignan is located on a plateau between vineyards and scrubland, here “nothing runs except the wind”.
We are here on the borders of “Minervois” a few kilometers from Saint-Jean-de-Minervois, a village famous in Languedoc for its famous Muscat. The village can be seen from afar thanks to its medieval tower.
The colors of the wine are displayed on the facades, the shutters and on the street furniture: pink, red and purple… The “wine tourism” village was renovated with the help of a public-private partnership. Indeed, Marc and Tine Verstraete have made their dream come true. By purchasing and renovating more than ten houses, they transformed Assignan and created a unique concept: “the Castigno village”, a bustling hotel, three restaurants, a brasserie…
A glimpse into History
The village owes its name to Asinius, a Roman who founded his villa. It is cited in historical texts in 936, in the founding charter of the Abbey of Saint Pons. In 1126, the village belonged to the counts of Minerve and underwent the crusade against the Albigensians. The lordship was then shared between the Abbey of Fontfroide and the chapter of Saint Pons then passed into the hands of the Brettes de Thurin of the county of Narbonne, which explains the presence of an old stronghold in the village.

There are wine estates in the village, with the possibility of visits and tastings. Further on, in the middle of the vineyards, stands the immense wine cellar of Château Castigno in the shape of a wine bottle with cork walls, designed by the architect Lionel Jadot.

To note, the Paris gallery, nestled in a small alley in the heart of the village, which offers various exhibitions of mainly local artists and artistic performances.
