Assignan through the ages
The village, perched at 275m, offers a landscape of vineyards to the south and scrubland to the north. The name of Assignan is attested for the first time in the charter of the foundation of the abbey of Saint-Pons in 936. Assignan presents a great archaeological wealth. There are many dolmens and rock shelters around (Dolmen de Mounio and Bois de Monsieur). Built in the XNUMXth century, the site was owned by the Order of the Knights of Malta. Even the Romans made a stopover there. From the medieval period remains the gate tower, vestige of the castrum. The parish church of Saint-Pierre is a XNUMXth century construction. The primitive church would have been the Saint-Pierre chapel located on a rocky outcrop overlooking Tudéry, burnt down in the XNUMXth century.
