Puisserguier

w 20210218 GD village Puissergiuer then83This wine-growing village, located on a major traffic route, has a rich past dating back to the Iron Age. A large Neolithic necropolis was discovered there. In the Middle Ages, the village was fortified, then it expanded over the centuries, from feudal castle to the Promenade, today the main place of life in the village.

As in many villages in Languedoc, housing is grouped on the snail-shaped mound of the castle, also called a “circulade” village.

In the historic area, we can visit the castle and the Saint-Paul church. The castle (currently being restored) witnessed the crusade against the Cathar heresy in 1209, during which it was taken by the armies of Simon de Montfort. During major work carried out in 2010 in the Viguier house on the Place de l'Église, painted ceilings around 500 years old were discovered. The closoirs were classified as historic monuments then deposited, the paintings restored by specialists and the painted subjects were the subject of a historical study.

The church, whose construction spans the XIe in the XIVe century, has undergone many restorations. But its main attraction lies in the two paintings by the regional painter Jacques Gamelin (who lived in the XVIIIe), illustrating episodes from the life of Saint Paul and classified as Historical Monuments.

Unusual, don't miss the visit to theecomuseum of the life of the past. In the old village school, passers of memory, gathered under theassociation "The memories of Puisserguier" collected more than 3500 objects. Displayed in situ, these objects offer us a beautiful reconstruction of the life of yesteryear. From the courtyard, to the classroom via the courtyard, going back to the last century is possible thanks to this essential visit.

PUISSERGUIER CASTLE

A castle from the Cathar period (11th and 12th centuries), it is located in the heart of the circular village of Puisserguier, on one of the routes to Santiago de Compostela.
Its important remains bear witness to a rich history: in 1209 during the Albigensian Crusade, it was one of the first faydit (rebel) castles, forcing Simon de Montfort to come and besiege it.

The ARESP association that manages it will introduce you to the remains of the building through a guided tour of the fortified enclosure, but also a recently inaugurated museum space or "image gallery" accessible from the castle courtyard. This magnificent restored setting in the old Pourcenal house was ideal for highlighting the medieval enclosures from the painted ceiling of the viguier's house that were unearthed. After restoration, you can admire these formidable vestiges of medieval heritage: characters, writings, heraldry, and other fantastic animals, particularly well preserved, as well as videos and explanatory tables.

A must-see. Every Wednesday afternoon in July and August, step back in time with a fascinating tour, from the dungeon to the room with the painted ceiling. You'll draw your coat of arms and be knighted as a page or squire!
